Bystander Trey Massey said he was standing outside the apartment building when Shoupe ran outside screaming ‘shoot me.’

Shoupe was taken to Carolinas-Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Shoupe’s aunt, Denise Spooner, said her nephew struggled with mental illness and sometimes had trouble ‘getting his medications right.’

She said he was living with his mother at the apartment complex near Tuckaseegee Road in west Charlotte.

An incident report from December 30 from the same address shows Shoupe called police around 5:50 pm. The report says he has a ‘mental handicap.’
